Norco EdgesPast Centennial 29-28

Article by A. Jacobs Nov 10 2009

It was a battle for the Big VIII lead and both Norco and Centennial High Schools were sporting identical 7-1 records and were undefeated in league play. The Huskies played host but rarely do big games live up to the hype that precedes it. Last Friday night proved to be the exception.

The Huskies put the first points on the scoreboard to take a 7-0 first quarter lead, but the Cougars came back in the second period with two scores of their own for a 14-7 advantage. The Huskies had a field goal blocked, but with their high-powered offense it didn't seem to be a major concern.

At halftime the score was 14-14 and there was excitement in the air that you could almost feel.

Heading into the fourth quarter the scoreboard said 21-21. It seemed that whenever the Huskies were mounting a drive, racking up the yards, the Cougar defense would tighten up, frustrating Centennial.

With six minutes to play the Huskies scored to take a 28-21 advantage. That's when the Cougars mounted a drive that kept the packed crowd on the edge of their seats as the Norco offense gobbled up the yards, getting first downs with only inches to spare.

As the clock ticked down to less than 30 seconds, the Cougars scored and they were down by one point. A timeout to sort out the options and Norco scored a two-point conversion and a 29-28 advantage with 26 seconds remaining.

The Huskies fell short and Norco players jumped up and down with an 8-1 record and sole possession of first place in the Big VIII.

Enjoy the images from the game.
